About the Czech Republic
Formed after the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the Czech Republic is a new country within the European Union that has a long and often turbulent history. The transition from being a communist state within the block of nations ruled by the former USSR was, however, peaceful. So peaceful that it was known as the Velvet Revolution. The Velvet Divorce followed when two factions in the country split apart, and the Czech Republic was created as a new and separate state.
Although rich in history and culture and one of the most romantic cities in Europe for a city break, Czechs are still enjoying their new-found freedom from the constraints of cold war Soviet rule and the capital, Prague, offers great shopping and a vibrant nightlife and café culture amid the thousands of medieval spires that dominate its skyline. Prague is a great place to visit; it is small enough to walk around easily but, as the whole city has been designated a world heritage site, tours take a long time because there is so much to stop and see.
Most of the infertility clinics within the Czech Republic are in Prague and have a good reputation. Medical facilities are modern and rival those in other western cities. If you are having IVF, you will need to visit the clinic regularly but you may have a day or two to explore further into the country as road, rail and bus links are generally good. Even a day trip by train through the many beautiful villages that lie just outside Prague is well worth it and you could aim for major tourist attractions such as Vranov Castle or Kalstjen Castle, both romantic destinations that take you straight into a fairytale.
If you have time to stay for a while after your treatment, particularly if you want to relax for a couple of weeks to find out the outcome, the Czech Republic has some fabulous spa towns such as Cesky Krumlov.
